Denae Pellerin - Silver
Women Triathlon
Denae Pellerin is 14 years old and a member of Skate Saskatoon. This
year she competed in the Silver Women Triathlon
at the SaskEnergy STARSkate Championships where she won the gold medal.
This earned her the opportunity to compete at the National HomeSense
STARSkate Championships in Brampton Ontario from April 2nd to 6th,
where she won the silver medal
in her event. This however is not the first time Denae has stood on the
podium at the National HomeSense STARSkate
Championships. Last year in Calgary, Denae won the silver medal in the
Bronze Women Triathlon.
Denae’s other career highlights include being the 2006 Jr. Bronze Women
Champion and the 2006 Saskatchewan Winter Games Champion. Next year she
plans on competing at the BMO Skate Canada Sectionals where she hopes
to have a personal best skate.
Denae is coached by former national competitor and medallist Sandra
Nicholat, at the ACT Arena in Saskatoon.
Outside of skating Denae is a grade 8 student at Vanier Catholic
School. Her hobbies include scrap booking, playing the
flute, drama, dance, art, music, and hanging out with friends.
When asked what do you enjoy the most about being a STARSkater Denae
replied “(I enjoy) the ability to have fun, skate three
different and unique programs, and being able to represent my province.
The triathlon is my favourite part about being
a STARSkater because it forces me to work on other things than jumps
and spins. It forces me to become a great skater in
every area in skating. It takes determination, dedication and a great
attitude to skate in the triathlon, because you have
so many different things to work on.”
Kelsey Nagy - Gold Women
Triathlon
Determined, entertaining, and goal oriented are but only a few words
one could use to describe 17 year old Kelsey Nagy.
This year the Grade 12 student from Weyburn was our Gold Women
Triathlon Champion, and the 2008 National HomeSense STARSkate
Gold Medallist in the Gold Women Triathlon Event. Kelsey blew her
competition out of the water by winning every event
and finishing the competition with a combined score of 121.48.
This is not Kelsey’s first trip to a national event however. In 2003
Kelsey represented Saskatchewan at the BMO Financial
Group Junior National Championships in Juvenile where she placed 9th.
She has also represented our province at four BMO
Financial Group Western Challenges, and is a four time provincial
champion.
Kelsey trains in Weyburn with her coach Cara Paicu, and also travels to
Wawota to train with Patty Hole. This year she
will be completing grade 12 at the Weyburn Comprehensive School, and
plans to attend university in the fall.
Kelsey also hopes to pass her Junior Competitive Test before finishing
her amateur skating career.
Outside of skating Kelsey enjoys coaching and hip hop.
When asked what do you enjoy most about being a STARSkater Kelsey
responded “I think what I enjoy the most about being a STARSkater is
how versatile the competition is. In the Gold Women Triathlon you have
to be strong in three
programs. It was so different for me to compete a skills and
interpretive program but I loved it!”
Congratulations Kelsey and Denae on your accomplishments at the
National HomeSense STARSkate Championships. Skate Canada - Saskatchewan
is proud of your accomplishments. |
